Research Intern
Md. Saiful Islam Shanto is a distinguished Research Scholar in International Relations based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is currently holding the position of Research Intern at the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS). He has completed his B.S.S (Honors) in International Relations from Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, with a CGPA of 3.85 out of 4.00 and he has also completed his M.S.S coursework from the same department (results pending). His research interests include International Relations, South Asian Politics & Security, Terrorism and Violent Extremism, Migration, Diplomacy, Peace & Conflict Studies, Environmental Politics, Regional Cooperation (SAARC & BIMSTEC), and China’s Foreign Policy.
Mr. Shanto is an accomplished author. His master's dissertation, titled "Terrorism and its influence on South Asian Politics: The Nexus of Security, Diplomacy, and Counterterrorism through the lens of Bangladesh," reflects his core research interests. He published multiple research articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as "Borders in Crisis: Mexican Migration and U.S. Policy Development" in the Journal of International Affairs and "China-Africa Economic Ties: Opportunities and Challenges" in the DCCI Journal of Business and Economic Policy.
His commitment to international dialogue is evident through his active participation in global academic forums, including conferences and workshops held in countries like Turkey, Maldives, India, and Sri Lanka. Recently, he presented his research paper, "Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA): A Critical Tool for Sustainable Development in the Face of Global Challenges," at the international conference "A World Beyond Crisis: Climate Solutions That Work," organized by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) in collaboration with the Embassy of Denmark and the World Bank. Furthermore, his analysis of China's role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was also presented at the VII Middle East Congress in Sakarya, Turkey. Beyond academia, Shanto regularly shares his expertise on foreign policy, international conflict, and diplomacy through contributions to national English dailies like the South Asia Monitor and The Daily Observer.
Complementing his research pursuits, Shanto has amassed significant practical experience in project management and civic engagement, working with several national and international organizations on projects related to safe migration, agricultural input markets, and feasibility studies. His leadership skills have been honed through roles such as the Secretary of the Project Management Wing at the Jahangirnagar University Research Society (JURS), and various leadership positions within youth-led organizations like Students for Liberty and the Jahangirnagar University Rover Scout Group.
