Reforms won’t happen overnight: Rizwana Hasan
Speaking at a dialogue titled ‘Voices of Hard Times: Dreams and Realities’ held at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) auditorium in Eskaton, Dhaka on Saturday (September 11), Rizwana discussed the challenges in addressing systemic issues.
The event was organised by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS).
The adviser emphasised that it is unrealistic to expect instant changes with the introduction of reform plans. “There are supporters of fascism in every corner of society. Therefore, it is impossible to change everything overnight. After living under party rule and fascism for so long, we’ve begun to accept many things as normal.”
Rizwana Hasan stressed the need for a justice system that delivers timely verdicts, stating, “We want a society where justice is served on time. While we criticise, let it be constructive, without losing focus on the real issues.”
Expressing her hope for a future free from oppressive institutions, she mentioned that the journey of reform has already begun.
However, she cautioned, “Just because a proposal has been made does not mean reform will be immediate. We need to consider our next steps carefully—what we should do, how to create political consensus. There is a vast amount of work to be done, and it must be done collectively.”
Rizwana Hasan pointed out that without accountability in positions of power, the dreams of reform would remain elusive. “Supporters of fascism are everywhere, and they will resist from those corners. Therefore, it is crucial for us to remain united.”
The dialogue provided a platform to reflect on the challenges of implementing reform in Bangladesh and highlighted the long road ahead in tackling deep-rooted issues of governance.
