Press Freedom in Bangladesh: Lessons From the Digital Security Act
24 November 2025
This report is a joint study by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) and the Clooney Foundation for Justice’s Trial Watch initiative, examining how the Digital Security Act (DSA) was used against journalists across Bangladesh. Drawing on a unique dataset of hundreds of cases and in-depth interviews, the study documents patterns of abuse, intimidation, arbitrary arrests, and the impact of digital laws on press freedom. The report highlights how vague and overbroad provisions enabled the criminalisation of journalistic work and offers evidence-based insights to guide future reforms under the evolving cyber-security legal framework in Bangladesh.
